Not Christian
Somebody's gotta say it.
I’m a Christian because I choose to be. I like the person I am when I base my life on my understanding of Christ. Also, to date, there are things I have no explanation for other than the supernatural, hand of God.
That said, I work to educate myself. I understand history. I understand facts. I understand reality. And I love the truth. As a Christian, I can speak with my full chest when I say Conservative Christianity has nothing to do with following Christ. Nothing. Notta. Zuilch. It does not align with Christianity outside of the United States. It does not align with non-white Christianity within the United States. It doesn’t align with unity. It doesn’t align with peace. It doesn’t align with the Love of God as understood by mere mortals. It does not align with the tenets of basic Christianity. Conservatism is a social, political, and cultural ideology that stands in opposition to Christianity. Labeling it “Christian” is a sales pitch.
That’s not an opinion. That’s a researchable, provable, historical fact. As someone who spent 20 years in the Conservative Christian Movement, I have my own lived experiences, but they are hardly necessary. Access to information has never been easier. Beyond that, you don’t have to worry about being lied to. Without anyone telling you specifically what to believe (looking at you preachers and teachers who convinced yourselves that God gave you the inside track on other people’s lives—not how that works, btw.), your brain and commonsense can have a truth party.
Christianity: Take care of the poor.
Conservatism: Not with my tax dollars.
Christianity: Welcome the stranger.
Conservatism: If you can’t build a wall, throw them into alligator Auschwitz.
Christianity: Love your neighbor as yourself.
Conservatism: Equality is unfair to white people.
Christianity: The Truth Will Out.
Conservatism: Change the truth to fit your narrative. Duh.
That’s just a glimpse into current affairs. The contrast is undeniable across this last decade. Unfiltered, it can be seen throughout our entire lives. The Heritage Foundation (Segregation/Project 2025), Christian Nationalism (America First/The Jews will not replace us,) and the KKK (terrorism in the Name of Jesus/Re-enslave Black people. If not, Lynch ‘em) are all facets of Conservative Christianity.
The contradiction traces back to the beginning of the United States and before. To be clear, this is not about political party affiliation and/or identity. Democratic, Republican, Democratic-Republican, MAGA, Democratic Socialist, Libertarian, Whigs, Federalist, etc, Conservative Christianity is why those party lines exist. —A thing the Founding Fathers never intended (The Federalist #9 and #10).
**Note:**
There is a distinct and obvious difference between the Black Church and the White Church in America. They boast the same standards, read from the same book, and claim the same savior. Yet, the focus, the character, the lessons, and the foundational output are vastly different.
(I am not referencing particular individuals. I am speaking of the bodies themselves.)
Black exposure to American Christianity was due to slavery and the stripping away of African Culture (That they stole to form Christianity) — If you learned to read, it came through slave bibles. You know, the ones with all the missing texts that might make you yearn for freedom (No Moses leading the Israelites for you. Also, F that Revelations New Heaven/ Earth, evil will be punished nonsense.) Or, the sermons that only talked about serving your masters (Joseph loved being a slave in Egypt. See how God rewarded him for not poisoning Pharaoh in his sleep…We’re all equal in God’s eyes. Slaves don’t need to be free.)
After the Civil War, Black people were not allowed in white churches unless it was to clean or serve (Ushers wore white gloves to keep the blackness from rubbing off) ‘cause that’s Christian.
The Black Church in America was created through force, suffering, and exile. It carries with it a spirituality and authenticity that cannot be duplicated or erased. This, I believe, has to do with the roots of Christianity and the Motherland. (Book of the Dead, anyone?)
{If you are not familiar with the Book of the Dead, it is an Egyptian Funerary text that, among other things, contains instructions for navigating the afterlife, and a checklist of things you should not have habitually engaged in if you wished to be reunited with Ra (aka God).
The 42 “Negative Confessions” or “Declarations of Purity” predate the Ten Commandments by several centuries. Seven of the Ten Commandments are on that list. Moses was raised in Egypt. Just saying…}
Fun fact: Evil rage, refusing to listen to the truth, and being nosy are on the list. Too bad there aren’t more Commandments.
Anyway, the Black Church is not the American Conservative Church. It is a Church that happens to be in America.
***End Note***
The American Church, white Christianity, is a form of supremacy. It is the cover story, the vehicle to make Capitalism (not Christian) and Colonialism (Not Christian) not only palatable, but desirable.
White Christianity was used in America to justify slavery, genocide, manifest destiny, Jim Crow, segregation, the War on Drugs, anti-equality laws…etc, the list is endless. They hide the evil of conservatism behind the cross because people would not support it if they were not fooled into believing carefully worded hate is actually the love of God. That is precisely how the pro-life movement was created. {I’ll share my essay on that because, why not? Lol}
American Christianity teaches you to live a certain way, act a certain way, talk a certain way, and play the game a certain way. This is how you get things from God. The things Conservative Christians prioritize involve wealth, security, power, status, and control to whatever degree affects their lives. These aren’t God-things. They are Capitalism-things. Colonialism-things.
Unfettered Christianity teaches that through Christ, we already have what we need to live accordingly. We improve ourselves by working on humility, meekness, charity, and lifting the least among us to whatever degree we can. There’s no colonialism in that. There’s no capitalism in that. There’s no special benefit to being white in that.
The American Church chooses, over and over, to burn hell, rather than give up the special benefit of being white. That continued harm to every life it touches is how you know that, other than its name, Conservative Christianity is anything but Christian.
